The Holistic Approach
Today, I wanted to touch on the subject of the holistic vs Western medicine approach. I will mostly talk about the holistic approach as I firmly believe that in order to truly attain health and wellness, one must master the understanding that love, care and attention are to be poured into this effort. Having said that, It is important to bring up that Western medicine is mostly utilized to treat illnesses. So this is why PREVENTION is imperative. Prevention is almost a practice, our daily habits, executed on a daily basis to achieve optimal health. The term “holism” was first mentioned by Jan Christian Smuts in 1926 to describe “whole that is greater than the sum of their parts”. During the 70’s western medicine took over due to the excitement of how modern medicine started to grow. However, once it was evident that modern medicine was not able to magically cure everything and as certain chronic illnesses did not respond to western medicine conventional treatments, the holistic approach came back to live. When people knock on the doors of holistic practitioners, the patients undergo a number of unique assessments that take lifestyle, job, spiritual and mental health, and nutrition and fitness levels into account. This approach allows the practitioner to rule out other causes and underlying problems. Once there is a treatment plan in place, this treatment plan is chosen in order to address and heal the person as a whole, including mind, body and spirit as well as it best suits the patient. This treatment actively encourage the involvement and participation of the patient in a gently but effective manner. The patient is highly regarded over the actual illness.
